Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao are twin daughters of a minor Manchurian noble, the family was massacred by Chinese rebels in a night assault. The two sisters were smuggled out in the confusion by the house maid and lived in poverty for 2 years before the old maid died of starvation. For 6 months more, the sisters lived on the streets stealing food.

One day they broke into the house of a wealthy local merchant but was noticed by the great Dr. who was a guest in the residence. The Dr. took them in and they were raised among his household. They were ten years old.

Now, both sisters work for the Dr. and often acts as his voice. Their loyalty is impregnable, except perhaps to the 3 daughters of the Dr. whom they love as sisters.
